Opening Reception: Fri, May 3, 6 – 10 pm
PHILADELPHIA- Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to announce the opening of its June exhibit, “Summer Above” a group show curated by Wallace Whitney. “Summer Above” will feature the work of four New York based artists: Matt Connors, Laura Hunt, Lauren Luloff, Joanna Malinowska and Roger Van Vorhees. This exhibit will begin the once a year tradition of the gallery working with an outside curator.
The show’s curator, Wallace Whitney, notes:
This show was conceived of as a blind date between four artists, all working in New York City, but not necessarily aware of each other. It is the special pleasure of a curator to make connections where they may not have existed before. The artists in Summer Above share restlessness with the constraints of their chosen mediums: painting, poetry, video and sculpture. It is not the restlessness of ennui or destruction but of reinvention and optimism about the possibilities of being an artist now.
About the curator:
Wallace Whitney is a Bronx-based artist who makes large gestural/atmospheric paintings that recall the aesthetic of New York School painting. His work has been featured internationally in galleries such as Horton and Company, New York; Galerie Bernard Ceysson, Luxembourg; Rowland Contemporary, Chicago; David Krut Projects, New York; CANADA, New York; and Gavin Brown?s Enterprise, New York.
In addition to being a working artist, Wallace Whitney is an adjunct professor of painting at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Whitney is also a co-founder and current co- director of CANADA, an artist-run art gallery located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
