In the late seventies, the United States government spent a few million dollars on the Star Gate Project, researching clairvoyant powers and Astral Projection. At the height of the project, there were over twenty-two military and domestic “remote viewers” providing intelligence reports, sensing current and future events. One can imagine the plane of existence inhabited by the remote viewer when collecting data. Matthew Frock’s paintings provide a glimpse into a part of a dimension that is not usually visible, a fractal understanding that reflects a human development in the wilderness.
Frock employs a strict formula of mark making, building compositions founded in Mondrian’s formalism, but contrast in their organic structure. The landscapes strike a balance between elements that are purely organic and components that lean toward mathematics and musical structure.
