PHILADELPHIA, PA-
The ancients used ceramic vessels for water, wine and grain. The breath and soul of a culture is preserved in the earthenware and offers momentary glimpses of every day life and meals shared. Kelsey Costello mines twenty-first century vessel forms and exploits the ceramic surface in unconventional ways, weaving epic American tales.

Costello received her BFA from Moore College of Art and Design, hiked the Appalachian Trail, and found work as a long haul truck driver.  She bounced around the country, seeing much, but remaining apart from the communities she drove through. Tiger Strikes Asteroid presents her first solo exhibition.

“Overpasses and underpasses weave together like chaotic baskets. Men at a truck stop, outside on a beautiful day, each one with his own table, his own cell phone, engaged in a related conversation. I drove through the great forests. There were beautiful towns, but all the stores turned into thrift shops, the signs said out of business. Small vignettes of existence, then extinguished.”
