Portals features two wall drawings that focus on the ways our interaction with technology has created new configurations of defined space inside our computers and media devices. Using the electrical system of the 319 building as a metaphor for more complex systems of connectivity and information distribution, Joanna Platt investigates the way these devices process and alter our interactions within communities. Drawn lines of conduit connect junction boxes fitted with lenses framing a view. Through one, bees emerge from a hive. Through another, computers watch over empty rooms. And, through these lenses, the images are also projected forward, pushing and pulling, causing the viewer to occupy a different location neither fully inside nor outside the work.
Joanna Platt received her MFA in 2009 from the University of the Arts, and her BFA in 1997 from Rutgers University. This is Joanna’s first solo show as a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid.
