Philadelphia –
Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to announce the opening of its November exhibition, Force Fields, with work by Nanna Debois Buhl, David Horvitz, and Jenny Perlin, organized by Alexis Granwell and Jenny Jaskey. The exhibition is part of a series of artistic programs celebrating the work of filmmaker Ross McElwee.
Taking McElwee’s filmic process as its point of departure, the exhibition brings together artists whose practices might be described as documentary, but only insofar as they remain rooted in notions of process, drawing from personal and intuitive relationships to their media while simultaneously invoking strategies of distance and reflection. Recording the pulls and attractions of circumstance, their works relay the power of force fields, dynamic topologies changing with both time and experience.
From the exhibition’s essay:
Filmmaker Ross McElwee describes his documentary method as a kind of force field. Camera in hand, he records everyday encounters with family members and friends, illuminating these conversations with the electricity of the camera’s gaze. His insistence to assert his own presence sets his films apart from purists of the cinéma vérité tradition; McElwee’s work is affecting precisely because it brings together direct cinema with personal interruptions that make his subjects’ and viewers acutely aware of these observations. The tension of watching others watch themselves being watched is palpable.
Alexis Granwell is a Philadelphia artist and member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid. Alexis Granwell has exhibited internationally including a 2005 solo exhibition at the Europos Parkas Museum, Vilinius, Lithuania.
