PHILADELPHIA PA – Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia presents “Dubh Glas,” an exhibition of new works by Douglas Witmer. Over the course of the past two decades, Witmer has become internationally known within the field of reductive geometric abstraction, exhibiting several varied but related bodies of work.
Writing in Art New England, the critic David Raymond said, “Witmer’s sensual paintings reflect an imaging project that secures a clear emotional weight.”
The exhibition title “Dubh Glas” is Gaelic for “from the dark water.“ It is the source of the artist’s first name, but also a metaphor he finds powerfully applicable to the element of personal mystery and discovery in making paintings. Witmer follows a course that is completely intuitive, yet bounded by a refined vocabulary of direct economical actions and geometric imagery. Every decision is made on the surface of the work. The resulting elemental nature of Witmer’s compositions is poetic rather than severe, leading the viewer toward a contemplative experience via the painted object.
Witmer’s work has been exhibited widely, including a solo exhibition at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. Other venues include MoMA PS1, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, The University of Maryland, The University of Dayton, ParisCONCRET (France), and Sydney Non-Objective (Australia). His work is in the collections of The Woodmere Art Museum, The Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska, and The Fellowship of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, as well as numerous corporate and private collections internationally.
