PHILADELPHIA- Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to announce the opening of its May exhibition, Hinterland, an installation by Caroline Lathan-Stiefel. Hinterland explores Lathan-Stiefel’s experience living in suburbia. Part cave, part thicket, Lathan-Stiefel will be covering the ceiling, walls, and floor with her usual array of craft and re-purposed household materials such as fabric, pipe cleaners, yarn, and plastic bags. The installation will be made up of forms referring to both man-made and natural elements and an eight channel sound component by composer Van Stiefel. Caroline Lathan-Stiefel has exhibited her work in numerous museums and galleries including, The Delaware Contemporary Art Center in Wilmington, the Powel House and Locks Gallery in Philadelphia, Towson University in Maryland, The Abington Art Center in Jenkintown, PA, Galerie Articule in Montreal, Suyama Space in Seattle, The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, SPACE Gallery in Portland, ME and Sandler Hudson Gallery in Atlanta. She is curating a show entitled Seepages for Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta in June 2010. She is the recipient of a 2009 Independence Foundation Grant, a 2008 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a 2005 Creative Capital Foundation Grant in Visual Arts, and a 2003 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Grant in Sculpture. Lathan-Stiefel received her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University in Providence, RI and her MFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland, ME.
