Jungmin Lee
Oct 7 – 30, 2020
Jungmin Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1994. Having grown up in hectic and crowded culture in Seoul, her interest of invisible networks in between busy life grew significantly. Jungmin has always been fascinated by subtle and indescribable moments and atmosphere that city and people radiate through interacting one another. Based on her point of view, she is intrigued to see how the world is connected with unseen lines which can be interpreted in either physically or conceptually. Naturally, she was drawn to printmaking, especially etching, that can express her own unique lines and forms on rigid plates, and she received her Bachelor’s degree in Printmaking at Hongik University, Seoul.
After completing her degree, Jungmin developed more into her idea of connection and conceptual lines that link all of us in our life. Beyond printing images, she experimented with various mediums such as photography, projection, video, and installation with daily materials we can see every day. The images, which she takes on her walks in the movement and following its paths, are concretely showed when she recorded motions from many strangers in the public space and added her improvised line drawings on top of this video. From her perspective, she regards lines as one of the most important formative languages to communicate, considering that she sees this whole world as one lasting line.
Jungmin has also trained as an educator, specializing in teaching studio art and art history. She had experiences of instructing drawing and basic printmaking knowledge to young students and western art history to 16-18 year olds. Moreover, she received a Master’s degree in Printmaking at Tyler school of art, Temple University. Jungmin spent her first year at Temple Rome in Italy and finished her degree at Temple University’s main campus in Philadelphia. Jungmin now lives in Philadelphia and works with copper plate, linoleum, sculpture, and photography.
