Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is excited to announce In Line, a group exhibition featuring Anthony Bowers, Ellie Tomlinson, and Nhi Vo.

In Line exhibits artworks that share common ground in the grid, a network of lines which exists in abstract and literal senses, shifting in meaning by varying context. At first glance, these works embrace minimalist tendencies, but each artist diverges from this starting point with manners poetic, deceptive, intimate, impulsive, and sensorial.

Anthony Bowers’ paintings depict empty notebook paper, materialized through paint and therefore distorted, deviating past a recognizable emptiness. These paintings present a demand; the “ought” of an empty page compels the viewer to organize thought in each wavering composition. The painting becomes a space shared between artist and viewer.

Ellie Tomlinson alchemically embeds familiar scents and materials into a three-dimensional composition, which seductively calls forth varied and hidden sense-memories for each viewer. Gridded armatures delineate environments populated by natural and synthetic objects and detritus. Material repetition in each enclosure suggests time’s passage.

Nhi Vo’s sculptures are an intimate offering of the delicate and the fragile, and austere quietness. Her videos reframe this stillness. Fruit, stone, or sky, Vo subtracts from the common thing its’ purported use to reveal unseen material identity.

Bowers, Tomlinson, and Vo are all artists making in Philadelphia, and introduced to Tiger Strikes Asteroid through open call submissions from prior years. TSA PHL is grateful to have the opportunity to curate from such a thriving pool of artists.
