SATELLITE Art Fair at the The Parisian Hotel, 1510 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL
Tiger Strikes Asteroid (TSA) is pleased to announce their participation in SATELLITE at the Parisian Hotel (1510 Collins Avenue) in Miami Beach, FL, during Art Basel Miami Beach, from December 1st to 4th, 2016. Curated by Mark Brosseau, their booth (number 20) will be called Phenomena and will feature eight artists representing all four sites of the Tiger Strikes Asteroid Network and four other cities from around the United States. The artists include Rachael Gorchov (TSA NY), Mary Henderson (TSA Philadelphia), Anna Kunz (TSA Chicago), Christopher Ulivo (TSA Los Angeles), Kelly Kristin Jones (Atlanta, GA), Jim Nolan (Houston, TX), Kirk Stoller (San Francisco, CA), and Jonathan Ryan Storm (Northampton, MA).
Phenomena brings together artists who deal with sensory experiences through differing approaches. Some of the artists address real-world situations in their work to heighten or highlight certain moments. Others use art as a way of activating the senses in an unexpected way. While it is common for art to engage our senses of vision and touch, these artists activate other senses as well.
Curator Brosseau says:
“When I was putting the booth together, I wanted to ensure representation from each TSA site, but I also felt it was important to bring in some guest artists. I decided to pull from non-TSA cities, which felt right since the core of the TSA mission is really to bring artists together and build community. We’re always looking to expand our family. The work in the booth is meant to explore the way that our senses are activated, and how art can accentuate or alter the way our senses experience the world. I also tried to bring in works that might activate senses beyond the visual.”
Mary Henderson’s relief sculpture, Clark Park, generates a strong tactile response: it gives the sense of something delicate that is in direct opposition to the force of the crowded gathering it depicts. The paintings Jonathan Ryan Storm allude to common things from everyday life – faces, language, gestures – and exaggerate a sensory response to that source. Jim Nolan’s pieces recall primary human functions and spin the way we experience those functions, activating a full range of senses in the process. Kelly Kristin Jones uses photography to highlight a visual experience that might get lost in the overabundance of visual information that exists. Rachael Gorchov creates seemingly simple sculptures in which both the texture and the painted marks create a layering of tactile experiences. Anna Kunz’s curtain painting uses natural light to create an everchanging visual presence that is also meant to shift with the movement of air in the space. Kirk Stoller’s sculptures, made of simple common materials, contort and shift the space around them in a way that forces viewers to shift their own stance and posture in order to interact with the work. Christopher Ulivo’s paintings blend the absurd with the common, triggering memories in the viewer but altering them with fantastical possibilities.
All of the artists in Phenomena have shown internationally and have been honored with various awards. Anna Kunz and Rachael Gorchov are founding members of TSA Chicago and TSA New York, respectively. Mary

SATELLITE opens with a Press Preview from 12 – 3 PM on Thursday, December 1st. It opens to the public at 3 PM, Thursday, December 1st and will remain open until 10 PM. Friday and Saturday hours are 12 to 10 PM, and Sunday hours are 12 to 6 PM.
SATELLITE is an alternative art fair that presents new and exciting projects that span the gamut of art, music, performance, installation, new media and tech. The 2015 show was highly attended by informed collectors and museum curators, received rave reviews from major art publications and had major sales throughout the week. SATELLITE 2.0 will be held NEXT DOOR to Aqua Art Fair and steps from Art Basel and Untitled. SATELLITE 2.0 will once again emphasize concept-driven rooms, rather than the typical salon style hang of the standard fairs.
Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a network of artist-run spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Each space is independently operated and focuses on presenting a varied program of emerging and mid-career artists. Our goal is to collectively bring people together, expand connections and build community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities. We seek to further empower the artist’s role beyond that of studio practitioner to include the roles of curator, critic, and community developer; and to act as an alternate model to the conventions of the current commercial art market. Our exhibitions and projects have been featured in numerous print and online publications including The New York Times, Art F City, Hyperallergic, The Huffington Post, L Magazine, Whitehot Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Two Coats of Paint, Artinfo, Artnet News, Beautiful Decay, and the artblog.
