(Los Angeles) Tiger Strikes Asteroid presents a group show curated by Carl Baratta entitled The Rock Cried Out, I Can’t Hide You opening on Saturday, November 5th, 2016, from 6 pm to 8 pm.
The artists in The Rock Cried Out, I Can’t Hide You utilize landscape and figure to drop the viewer into scenes of conflict with no clear beginnings or endings, just chases. The tension between figure and landscape is uncertain; are they at odds or in accord? The paintings, drawings, and collage works range from a riotousness of color and line to pattern to subtle control. The group show explores the psychological narrative and relational rawness of holding utter rejection and the hope of acceptance in a moment that is both discrete and eternal.
The show title is a line from the song “Sinnerman”. Nina Simone’s rendition of this gospel drops the listener right into the middle of a chase scene of a hunted/haunted person. The landscape won’t hide them, the rock refuses, and the river boils. Sinnerman, the song’s protagonist, is in crisis and exposed to the universe. The last refrain the music swells and Simone cries out “Power Lord!” Has Sinnerman chosen to embrace sin and celebrate chaos, sought redemption and the strength to regain order, or does Sinnerman remain teetering in uncertainty? Simone leaves us unsure.
The works in this show continue the conversation of what is gleaned from reflecting on rejection. The viewer is encouraged to question the conflict between embracing and running from difficult narratives and how such a conflict leaves one exposed: to oneself, to the familiar and the foreign.
