Mnēmonikos is an exhibition that examines the fine line between the clarity and obscurity surrounding the impressions of memory and landscape. Through a variety of media, each artist explores the dreamlike haze of recalling memories and depictions of thoughts, emotions, textures and sounds. Each in turn portrays their specific mental landscape. By combining familiar forms, textures and sounds the viewer is invited to share in the quiet intimacy of moments and thoughts experienced both real and imagined. Each asking, “How do I show you this place where it happens, this place in my mind?”
¹The word “mnemonic” is derived from the Ancient Greek word μνημονικός (mnēmonikos), meaning “of or relating to memory”. Mnemonics in antiquity were most often considered in the context of what is today known as the art of memory. The art of memory (Latin: ars memoriae) is any of a number of loosely associated mnemonic principles and techniques used to organize memory impressions, improve recall, and assist in the combination and ‘invention’ of ideas. Techniques commonly employed in the art include the association of emotionally striking memory images within visualized locations…Any or all of these techniques were often used in combination with the contemplation or study of architecture, books, sculpture and painting, which were seen by practitioners of the art of memory as externalizations of internal memory images and organization.
