The three newest members of Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago, Debra Kayes, Julia Klein, and Nicole Mauser share a process-oriented methodology of making artwork that emphasize residues of the hand. Kayes’ recent paintings rely on repeated mark-making. Using a palette knife, she makes the same mark countless times, which allows her to explore a meditative state and intentionally forces her to be perceptive and open to change so she can discover modification and mutation. Klein’s work in this exhibition explores different modes of sculptural support through a range of materials and forms. Mauser’s recent paintings translate the experiential color of holograms into analog gradients using oil paint on paper and canvas presented in site specific installations in response to architecture. This exhibition brings the artists’ work together for the first time.
Debra Kayes is an artist, designer, and Associate Professor of Instruction at Columbia College Chicago. Debra has shown her art and design projects in venues such as the Illinois State Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Chicago Artists Coalition, The Hyde Park Art Center, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. She is a former Convergence Academies Research Fellow and Chicago Artists Coalition Hatch Projects resident. She is currently a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Chicago. Julia Klein has exhibited her work nationally in Chicago, New York, Detroit, Milwaukee, Philadelphia. She participated in the 2018-19 Chicago Jewish Artists Fellowship as well as residencies including the Terra Foundation Summer Residency in Giverny, DEPE Space (MOCAD), Vermont Studio Center, and Sitterwerk (St. Gallen, Switzerland). She received a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from Bard College. She is a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago. Since 2009, she has run Soberscove Press, which produces books about art and projects with artists. soberscove.com
Nicole Mauser’s paintings and installations investigate tensions at play between color fields, materiality, and mark making within the language of abstraction. Exhibitions include rK Gallerie Lichtenberg (Berlin, Germany), Carrie Secrist Gallery (Chicago, IL), Reynolds Gallery (Richmond, VA), Carthage College (WI), and many others. Permanent collections include the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, The Alexander, and the New York Public Library Archives. She was a co-founder of the artist-run gallery PLUG Projects and the Kansas City Plein Air Coterie. Mauser is a former HATCH Projects resident at the Chicago Artists Coalition and DCASE Artist Grant recipient. Currently, she is a Lecturer in the Department of Visual Art at The University of Chicago. nicolemauser.com.
