CHICAGO
Cydney Lewis: Suspended in the Realm of Possibility
Residency: Mar 20–May 1, 2021
Opening Reception: Apr 17, 12–4 pm
Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago is pleased to announce a residency and exhibition by Cydney Lewis. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Lewis has been working on a series of digital prints that reflect on our consumer society during this societal upheaval, as it relates to climate change. Suspended between reality and a dystopian future, this body of work melds imagery from print magazines with Lewis’ digital drawings. During her residency, she plans to transform these digital prints by incorporating organic and inorganic materials with the existing imagery, in order to produce larger works that visualize surreal, futuristic worlds.
The first portion of Lewis’ residency will take place remotely in her studio; her artistic progress can be followed on TSA CHI’s Instagram beginning Saturday, March 20, 2021. A culminating exhibition of the work produced during her residency will open in the TSA CHI gallery on Saturday, April 17, 2021, with a reception from 12–4 p.m; additional open hours are Saturdays, April 24 and May 1. All gallery visits are by appointment only due to COVID-19 safety procedures. Information can be found below about safely visiting the gallery.
ABOUT CYDNEY LEWIS
Through the transformation and manipulation of materials, Cydney Lewis considers the intersection of the natural, spiritual, and scientific worlds. Pattern, repetition, and constant movement form the foundation of her work, as she weaves together images of nature, technology, destruction, and beauty into landscapes that make the real surreal. Lewis observes nature’s perseverance and ability to adapt in our current landscape; through her work, she asks how we as humans might also coexist in harmony.
Lewis is a Chicago-based multimedia artist with a distinguished multidisciplinary background. She began in architecture, at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, where she received a BS in Architectural Studies; she also attended the L’École D’architecture de Versailles, France. The fluidity of her ability to transform materials reflects her mastery of ballet as well as her endeavors in film. Her art is held in private collections around the world, and has been exhibited widely, at venues including the Union League Chicago, Saugatuck Center of the Arts, Hyde Park Art Center, and The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. She has received various honors, among them residencies with Chicago Public Schools and Lyseloth Musikerwohnhaus Basel, Switzerland, as well as awards including Best in Show at Governor State University and the Black Creativity/Green Art Award from the Museum of Science and Industry.
